While out on the coast a few weeks back, Stephanie and friends were standing on the NW edge of the Continental U.S. looking down at the ocean. Nothing. After an hour or so, they were going to leave when someone else hollered 'WHALE'.
Steph said it looked like the whale was showing off, that he/she could hear the people, way up above the water, ohhing and ahhing....

There was a lot of kelp in the area also, so if you enlarge the pix, you will see that the whale is draped in kelp. {It looks like a fresh scar on it's back.} |
There seemed to be only the one whale, and according to onlookers, it was probably the same one that had been there the day before. Maybe it was following some salmon.
